An Excerpt from the Piece:
"I go to my bedroom window and cut my knee crawling out. Free, I run down the dirt path to their huts gathered, following their songs, their voices and the pant of my breath makes me feel alive. I see them gathered in a circle. Stunned, I watch as they jerk their heads up, twisting their arms, and something about the way their muscles gleam stirs me. I hear footsteps behind me, and it is my father, holding a wooden paddle. He paddles my butt home, but I keep looking back, afraid they will see me. But they don’t see me, and I feel bad about that, too."
